Ref knocked cold
CANADIAN-based Mexican middleweight
Luis Flores was banned from boxing for
two years after knocking out referee Ken Wood
during the fourth round of his contest with
Mark Flynn in Halifax, Nova Scotia on
November 23.
Flores lost his cool after being deducted a
point for a low blow and then disqualified for
swearing as he protested.
Wood suffered minor concussion from the
blow and is considering whether to press
criminal charges against the boxer, who has
been living in Canada since 1999 on a work
visa.
Rowland returns
JASON ROWLAND, former WBU light-welter
champ, is to carry on fighting, but as a
welterweight.
The east Londoner will continue to be trained
by Jimmy Tibbs, but is now nanaged by Dean
Powell and boxes on the WSO December 12
card at the Equinox nightclub in Leicester
Square.
The long-term plan is for Rowland to
challenge either for the British title or South
African Jan Bergman, the WBU king.
"We'll take it one step at a time," said Powell.
Jason may decide after boxing next week he
doesn't want to do it any more."
Rowland's last outing was a stoppage defeat
b y Ricky Hatton.
Vanzie's new foe
BOBBY VANZIE has a new opponent and
date for his WB0 lightweight title
eliminator. The Bradford southpaw, who
since signing for Sports Network has been
unimpressive, meets Yuri Romanov in
Preston on January 18.
Young Romanov, from the Ukraine, has
10 wins from 11 and destroyed Harlow's
Steve Murray in September.
With Vanzie rated No. 2 (behind Julien
Lorcy of France) and Romanov at No. 15 it
is hardly a final eliminator for a shot at
champion Artur Grigorian, who the same
night is set to make a voluntary in Essen.
Having said that, if Grigorian has a
mandatory pressing and Lorcy forgoes the
option of challenging him, Vanzie, as the
next available contender, would deserve
his chance if he overcame Romanov.
Vargas man charged
THE plot thickens in the story involving
Fernando Vargas' positive test for
anabolic steroids when what is believed
to be traces of the drug were found at the
Paterson, New Jersey home of Mazen Ali,
one of the boxer's training team.
Ali was arrested on kidnapping charges
and when police searched his home they
found a small amount of steroids. Mazen
is expected to be prosecuted for possessing
the drug in addition to kidnapping and
weapons charges.
The bodybuilder served as a nutritionist
for Vargas for Fernando's match against
Oscar De La Hoya last September.
Vargas, suspended for nine months and
fined $100,000 by the Nevada Commission,
admitted the drug was in his system for
the De La Hoya fight but denied knowingly
taking it.
