WILLIAMS NOT HEALED
RICHARD WILLIAMS' rematch with PAUL SAMUELS is off the
September 21 Brentwood Ringside show.
Williams' right eye, cut badly when he shared a technical draw with Samuels at the end of
June, has not healed fully. Matchroom say the return is now likely to happen late in October or
early November.
Colin Dunne has an opponent for the September 21 card - one Esteban Morales of Colombia.
The bill also features a third meeting between Johnny Armour and Francis Ampofo for the
WBU bantamweight title, plus Nottingham's Nicky Booth defending his Commonwealth
bantamweight title against undefeated Toronto southpaw Steve Molitor, known as "The
Canadian Kid".
THE chief support to Jones-Woods is between Ronald
'Winky' Wright and Bronco McKart, who have boxed
twice before, both 12-rounders.
Wright, who defends his IBF light-middleweight belt in this
all-southpaw affair, won the two meetings on points and is
expected to make it a hat-trick.
It is surely the final fling for McKart to stay in the top flight.
The former WBO champion's only losses since April 1993 have
been inflicted by Wright, who in 1996 and 1997 made a name
for himself in Britain when defending the WBO belt who took
from Bronco against Ensley Bingham, Steve Foster and Adrian
Dodson.
I WAS interested to see the letter in BN's August 16 edition from
my old friend James Byrne on the subject of fighters taking up
refereeing and officiating in bouts involving former opponents.
Jim Byrne and I go back more than 30 years. At the start of the '70s, when we
were in our early 20s, we were regular contributors to the BN letters page and
started corresponding with each other.
A couple of times Jim came to London for big fights and stayed with me, and I
went up to Nottingham for fights and stayed with Jim. So BN can forge
friendships.
PHILLIP HOLIDAY, South Africa's former IBF
lightweight champion who looks tarnished
goods, is relaunching his career Down Under.
He has based himself in Australia and boxes Ernie
Artango, who has been inactive for three years, in
Southport on September 27.
The 32-year-old Holiday, who went 12 rounds with
Shane Mosley when losing his IBF title, was proposed
as a challenger for IB0 welterweight champion
Jawaid Khaliq in Nottingham in July.
The match was scrapped, but Khaliq's promoter
Tommy Gilmour said this had nothing to do with the
adverse reaction to Holiday's selection.
LEGAL problems have derailed Gianluca
Branco's immediate chances of facing world
light-welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu.
Branco, the WBC's No. 1 challenger, was next in
line to challenge Tszyu but the alleged extortion
racket which saw both him and his brother Silvio
jailed for a spell this summer has placed a big
question mark over his future.
Nonetheless, Branco is now out of jail and believes
he could be boxing again on October 5, when
Vincenzo Cantatore and Wayne Braithwaite finally box
for the vacant WBC cruiserweight belt in Rome.
WILLIE LIM0ND and GARY THORNHILL tune
up for serious fights on Katherine Morrison's
latest dinner show at the Thistle Hotel, Glasgow
tonight (Friday September 6).
Unbeaten local super-feather Limond meets
ASSEN VASSILEV over eight-threes, while
Liverpool's former British super-feather king
Thornhill takes on RAKHIM MINGALEEV in a six.
Limond meets Edinburgh hotshot Alex Arthur for
the vacant British 9st 4lbs title on October 19 and
needs some rounds. He last fought in March, when
outscoring Dave Hinds over six.
Vassilev, a Bulgarian, should have a weight
advantage, but little else. He was stopped in one
round by Stephen Smith in London in July 2000 but
did last into the fifth against undefeated Matthew
Hatton last year (March).
Limond is a lovely boxer and will probably be
looking to win around the sixth or seventh.
Thornhill has signed for the Morrisons and been
sparring Limond. He can outscore fine journeyman
Mingaleev, then concentrate on a good fight with
Nicky Cook on October 5 on the Audley Harrison
Liverpool Olympia bill.
