OTTKE SHOULD BE ABOVE JOE
AFTER looking through your world ratings (BN May 31) I noticed
you have Joe Calzaghe rated No. 1 in the super-middle division
and Sven Ottke No. 2.
I can't understand why Calzaghe is rated above Ottke when he has
beaten only one fighter you rate in your top 10 (Charles Brewer, No. 8).
Ottke has fought and beaten Brewer twice and fought and beaten the
No. 7, Thomas Tate, twice as well.
Joe's lofty ranking has more to do with patriotism than commonsense.
If the two met, Ottke would box circles round Joe. Sven is a vastly
underrated fighter outside Germany, but anyone who has been watching
his career unfold on Eurosport will appreciate what a talent he is.
So let's get Joe over to Germany or bring Ottke to Wales to sort this one
out. - CHRIS KYLE, BOGNOR REGIS, WEST SUSSEX.

WILLASTON ABC staged a 12-bout end-of-season Jubilee show at the
Tranmere Rovers Recreation Centre on May 31.
Matchmaker Don Parr was in the unique position of boxing on his own bill, but despite
losing 2st, his opponent failed to appear and the bout fell through.
The heavyweight encounter between Nick McGarry (Doncaster Plant Works) and John
Rice from Workington topped, with McGarry winning on points.
Round one saw the Yorkshireman quickly into his rhythm, scoring with short left hooks to
the body as the taller Rice milled on the retreat, giving as good as he got.
Nick upped the tempo in the second, switching from body to head as he gained control.
John faded slightly, but was still in contention. Some shots strayed off target behind Rice's
back and in the kidney area, but referee Alec Leslie kept on top of things.
The last was even until the final half-minute, when McGarry looked as if he might prevail
inside the distance. But a shattered John deserved to stay the course.
Willaston welter Phil Langan drew a tartar in Aron Thomas (Clwyd), son of former
Manchester United and Welsh International Micky Thomas.

SURPRISINGLY, Stewart Langley is not that upset
about his debateable ABA flyweight finals loss to
Duncan Barriball in April.
"It was close," says the Hollington southpaw, "but to be honest I was so
disappointed with the way I boxed, I felt I didn't deserve to win.
"I boxed so badly - within myself. I don't know why, but it just didn't
happen for me on the night.
"I'd stopped him the year before, so maybe was over-confident."
Others were not so accepting of the 2-1 jury defeat (the computer broke
down and it was scored on pen and paper by the jury).
"When I got back to the dressing room, everybody was telling me I won. A
coach from Manchester said he wouldn't be surprised if our club complained
about the decision."
