BARRY McGUIGAN's hopes of winning a second world title look
satisfyingly credible after his fourth round demolition of Brazil's Francisco
Tomas Da Cruz at Luton Town football ground.
The former WBA featherweight champion rolled back the clock with an
exciting display of sustained aggression that thrilled the crowd of about 12,000
who had turned out on a fine, warm evening.

THE former world light-heavyweight champion Jose
Torres, has resigned as head of the New York Boxing
Commission. It is said that Jose has been asked to write a
book on Mike Tyson for a fee reported to be $350,000. It
was good to see a man with Jose's experience involved in
regulating boxing, even though being a good boxer does not
necessarily make one a good administrator.

THOMAS HEARNS will fight again, attempting to win
back the World Boxing Council middleweight title from
Iran Barkley in the autumn. Hearns doesn't want to go out
of boxing a loser. Barkley can't hope to make nearly as
much money against any other opponent.

GHANA'S Azumah Nelson retained his World Boxing Council super featherweight
title with a big-hitting performance as he overcome a slow start to crush game
southpaw Lupe Suarez, from Texas, after 27 seconds of the ninth round at the Trump
Plaza casino hotel.

CANADA'S Matthew Hilton will not now be defending his
IBF light-middle title against Australia's Troy Waters at
Ottawa on July 31. Hilton says he needs more time to get
down to the 11 stone limit.
Instead, Hilton will box a non-title 10-rounder against a selected
middleweight on promoter Bob Arum's ESPN TV show at Las
Vegas on July 30. Mr Arum has won purse bidding for Hilton's
officially ordered defence against No. 1 IBF contender Robert
Hines, a fight likely to take place in October.
Another planned fight to be cancelled is the proposed
heavyweight match between Tyrell Biggs and Francesco Damiani at
Milan on July 3. America's ABC TV network was to have shown
the fight, but they pulled out when the Schlitz beer company
withdrew sponsorship.
