WHAT should have been merely a "warm-up" bout before his
European title challenge ended in a shock defeat for Britain's
light-welterweight champion Lloyd Christie.
The 25-year-old title-holder from Wolverhampton was outpointed
over eight rounds on the televised Fight Night show at the
Manningham Sports Centre by Birmingham-based Delroy Bryan
(l0st 4lbs).
Bryan, only 20, and too young to box for a British championship, is
making a habit of winning when he's not expected to, for Christie
(l0st 53 lbs) followed the same path as previous Bryan victims
Darren Dyer and Mickey Hughes.

ON A personal basis, 1987 was an interesting year with a
trip to Las Vegas for a WBC Ratings Committee meeting
and the Mike Tyson vs Pinklon Thomas fight, as well as
chairing the committee at the WBC convention in London.
Still on a personal basis, my pick for fighter of the year
would rest between Julio Cesar Chavez, Thomas Hearns
and Miguel Lora, with Chavez just getting the nod. My
European "Fighter of the Year" would be Sumbu Kalambay,
with Gianfranco Rosi as runner up. Top Commonwealth
fighter would have to be either Mike McCallum or
Jeff Fenech.

BARRY McGUIGAN's future has, in recent times, been
as much a topic of speculation and rumour as the contents of
Joan Collins' private diary.
The former WBA featherweight champion was largely to
blame with his indecision over whether he would come back
to boxing or pursue a career as a racing driver, pop singer or
whatever.

FORMER heavyweight champion George Foreman gave his most
impressive performance since launching his comeback last March as he
overwhelmed game but limited Ricky Sekorski in the third of their
scheduled 10-rounder at Bally's Grand casino hotel.
Referee Richard Steele intervened with Sekorski taking punches
without reply after two minutes 48 seconds of the third. And afterwards
the 39-year-old Foreman said he wants a fight a month leading to a world
title bout with Mike Tyson.
