ISLINGTON middleweight prospect Michael Watson continued his steady progress in the
pro ranks with a clear, if hard fought, points win over Telford veteran Cliff Gilpin in the
eight-round main event on what was one of the more entertaining of the recent shows at this
venue.

KETTERING southpaw SHANE PORTER climbed off the
floor to become the Midlands Area featherweight champion
with a sensational third round stoppage of ex-amateur star
COLIN LYNCH at Trentham Gardens.
Porter was floored by a perfect right in the second, but had
Lynch over four times to force referee Jim Pridding's
intervention after 2.35 of the next round.

THE career of Dave Douglas, the Larkhall gipsy, has come to a halt and there are rumours
that the ex-Scottish welterweight champion has retired. The last heard of him he was
planning a holiday in Australia.
Many fight folk in Glasgow thought Dave was hard done by when he lost narrowly on
points to Gary Jacobs, who then strapped on the Steve Watt belt that goes with the Scottish
title. When his manager, Alex Morrison, arranged a return fight with Jacobs for the title,
Dave pulled out sick.

DISAPPOINTING as the fight was, Mike Tyson's easy but
unexplosive win over Bonecrusher Smith at least should
make the heavyweight champion's next outings seem more
equal.
At least until he demolishes someone again the way he
did Trevor Berbick.

WITH virtually every contest bitterly contested, there was
no lack of entertainment for the capacity crowd in the City
Hall. There was one major shock — the exit from the
national championships of last season's lightweight finalist
Steve Snagg (R.A.F.) who was superbly handled by
Exeter's Tony Hagger.
