WHEN Ian Chantler forced Mick Courtney into a fifth round retirement at
Wembley last month, the person least surprised by the result was Chantler
himself.
Even though the cause of Courtney's premature pull-out was double
vision, Chantler was always confident of winning, despite being a short
notice "selected opponent".

N EW Irish middleweight champion Sam Storey has
received a trans-Atlantic challenge f r om his old amateur
rival, Boston-based Dubliner Stephen Collins.
When they met in the final of the Irish amateur
championships in 1985, Storey was a convincing points
winner. The Belfastman had t u r n e d professional by the
time the following year's tests came around, but Collins
accepted an invitation to spar with him in Belfast.
The training sessions must have done Stephen some
good, for he succeeded Storey as amateur middleweight
champion.

BRITISH welterweight champion Eddie Thomas (right) produces
one of the finest performances of his career to outscore world
class American Billy Graham at Harringay in February 1949. Eddie
went on to win Empire and European titles before becoming one of
the country's leading managers.

MIKE McCALLUM successfully defended his World Boxing Association lightmiddleweight
title for the sixth time and achieved the acclaim for which he'd yearned as
he sensationally knocked out Donald Curry with a big left hook in the fifth of their
scheduled 15-rounder at Caesars Palace sports pavilion.
Jamaican McCallum, who boxes out of New York, had his legs buckled by a
right-hander in round two and said afterwards it was the closest he's been to going on the
floor.
