AGAINST all odds and most expectations Dave
McAuley, the British flyweight champion of fewer
than six months standing, gets a chance at the world
flyweight title when he challenges WBA title-holder
Fidel Bassa of Colombia over 15 rounds at the King's
Hall, Belfast, tomorrow (Saturday).
McAuley's manager, Barney Eastwood, has the
connections with the WBA to secure the challenge
for his boxer. He dealt with that body before with
former WBA featherwight champion Barry
McGuigan.
THE Eastwood gym in Castle Street, Belfast, is a boxing buff ' s delight. Once he has viewed
the current local attractions going through their training routine, he can take himself on a
self-guided tour of the fight factory's picture gallery.
What a feast of memories it stirs up. Vying for his attention alongside superstars like Joe
Louis, Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard are framed photos, programmes and
handbills bearing names and images of many great Irish ringmen of the past.
SOME MEN achieve so much as amateurs, the money
game is the only real incentive left for them. Take John
Hyland for instance. His unpaid exploits numbered the
national schoolboys, the junior ABAs, the senior ABAs,
t h e regular England position and ultimately the bantamweight
spot in the 1984 Great Britain Olympic team.
Newly-crowned British champ Billy Hardy stood out
among countless names littered among t h e spree. H e fell in
two.
