STYLES and temperaments look marvellously suited to produce one of
the best fights of the year when British welterweight champion Kirkland
Laing defends his crown against Rocky Kelly at the Ramada Inn Hotel,
Lillie Road, Fulham on Thursday, November 26, postponed from
October 22 because of Laing's illness.
The match pits the brimming natural talent, flashy footwork, and
dazzling hand speed of Laing against the ferocious aggression, raw
strength, and simple courage of Kelly.
UNSUNG, but a thorough professional, Gary Cooper gets
a well deserved second chance at the British lightmiddleweight
title when he takes on champion Lloyd
Hibbert over 12 rounds at Wisbech on Tuesday (November
24). The show is part of ITV's Seconds Out series.
WILL THEY or won't they? Sugar Ray Leonard and
Marvelous Marvin Hagler have both said t h e y ' r e content in
retirement but Thomas Hearns, very much the Hit Man
after knocking out Juan Domingo Roldan, has thrown down
the gauntlet to t h e only t w o fighters to have d e f e a t e d him. It
remains to be seen if they'll pick it up.
HARD-HITTING excitement looks guaranteed when Puerto Rico's
Edwin Rosario meets Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez in what could be the
greatest lightweight fight of recent years at the Las Vegas Hilton tomorrow
(Saturday, November 21).
Rosario will be defending his World Boxing Association lightweight title
against Chavez, the undefeated World Boxing Council superfeatherweight
champion. It's scheduled for 12 rounds but seems highly
unlikely to go all the way.
LONG-SERVING Kieran Joyce restored his flagging
reputation and simultaneously cast a shadow over Neville
Brown's status as an Olympic hope as England and Ireland
produced a quality international at Bletchley Leisure
Centre.
