BRITISH bantamweight champion Ray Gilbody bids to win
a coveted Lonsdale Belt outright when he takes on old
amateur rival Billy Hardy of Sunderland at Sutton Community
Leisure Centre, St. Helens on Thursday (February
19).
It is also a comeback fight for Gilbody and one which he
simply cannot afford to lose if he is to continue in
championship class with any credibility.
Gilbody was flattened in just one round in his last fight
when he faced former European flyweight champion
Antoine Montero of France for the European 8st 61bs
crown in Paris.

BRITISH cruiserweight king Andy Straughn of Hitchin
finally defends against Nottingham's Midland Area title
holder Roy Smith over 12 r o u n d s at the Alfreton Leisure
Centre on Tuesday.

DONALD CURRY, former undisputed world welterweight
champion, made an impressive debut in the
light-middle division although denied what looked a
certain stoppage win when previously unbeaten Tony
Montgomery was disqualified in the fifth round for
persistent butting.

BERNARDO PINANGO OF Venezuela retained
his World Boxing Association bantamweight title,
but loser Frankie Duarte won the hearts of the crowd
in a bloody, magnificent 15-round war at the
Inglewood Forum.
