FORMER amateur star Kevin Taylor threw the super-featherweight scene into confusion
by outpointing Central Area champion Les Walsh over 10 crowd-pleasing rounds at
Oldham Sports Centre.
Walsh was to have challenged Najib Daho for t h e British title, but Daho pulled out with a
knee injury. Instead, the 26-year-old from Manchester gambled and agreed to defend his
own crown against Taylor.
The defeat means that Walsh is now surely out of the national picture, even though the
Board of Control had originally agreed to a new date for his challenge to Daho. That was
May 26.
MIDDLEWEIGHT contender Iran Barkley looked extremely
lucky to win a 10-rounds points decision over the
WBC's "junior" world middleweight champion Jorge
Amparo in the rain-swept outdoor arena in the first of the
three big Caesars Palace shows.
FORMER welterweight champion Don Curry moved
nearer a crack at a second world title (probably Buster
Drayton's IBF light-middleweight crown) with a fifth round
disqualification win over the former IBF champion Carlos
Santos of Puerto Rico in the second of the big shows in the
Caesars Palace outdoor arena.
