BACK in 1969 I wrote a small piece for Boxing News about
an Argentinian middleweight called Carlos Monzon, who
was still relatively unknown, but showing distinct promise.
At that time t h e middleweight division was ruled by Nino
Benvenuti, a former Olympic Games gold medal winner
with a remarkable professional record of only three losses
in 82 fights.
The Italian was a brilliant fighter, and I honestly did not
think that Monzon could lift his title, particularly in Italy.
Carlos proved me wrong, by ripping the crown from
Nino's head and going on to defend it 14 times.
I know find myself in a similar situation with regard to the
new WBA light-welterweight champion Juan Martin
Coggi.

THE last time I saw Sugar Ray Robinson was in the early
70s when he dropped into Telstar Gym in Manhattan to d o a
commercial for Adams Hats. He was about 50 then and he
looked handsome, debonair and brightly energetic.
In our exchange of small talk I happened to ask if he still
worked out. "Every day in the w e e k , " he said with pride.
Now that he has Alzheimer's Disease at the age of 65, the
public is wondering if his condition was caused by
punishment in the ring. He suffered from diabetes and
hypertension long before his neurological affliction was
announced publicly.

IT WAS during a chat with former Stoke middleweight
Larry Parkes at a meeting of the London Ex-Boxers'
Association that the question arose of how many times
Larry's former manager Benny Jones met World flyweight
champion Jackie Brown.
Said Larry: "Most people believe they only met twice,
but in fact they met three times." Later Larry sent me the
details, as follows — September 1937 at Hanley, December
1938 at Douglas, Isle of Wight, and July 1939 at
Manchester. More of these fights later.
