LLOYD HONEYGHAN bombed out former WBA
light-welterweight champion Gene Hatcher in 45
amazing seconds in the bullring of the Spanish
holiday resort.
Honeyghan retained his world welterweight crown
with a destructive and explosive performance,
knocking Hatcher down with the first punch he
landed with after 25 seconds, and then driving him to
the ropes to finish the job.
It was an incredible ending and showed just what a
ruthless fighting machine Honeyghan has become in
the past couple of years. In that, nothing should
detract from his display. You can't do better than to
knock out your opponent in the first minute of the
first round.
FRANK BRUNO plodded to a laboured, unimpressive
eighth round victory over a disappointing REGGIE
GROSS on the Honeyghan-Hatcher undercard.
Gross was better than Bruno's previous victim, the
aged Chuck Gardner, but the match was still not a
good one.
GARY MASON, weighing an enormous 17st 8lbs, stopped experienced
American EDDIE RICHARDSON in the seventh round. Mason, rattling up his
20th win and 19th by knockout or stoppage, forced Richardson to take four
counts before the end.
Unbeaten welterweight ERROL McDONALD continued his run by stopping
JOSE MARIA CASTILLO, a 30-year-old from Zaragoza, in the third round.
