OLD Tommy Gilmour's eyes would have sparkled behind the pebble glasses and there
would have been a gruff grunt of approval at the news in Glasgow concerning his son,
Tommy Gilmour Jr.
The old man, shrewd as he was, would never have considered that his son could become
the uncrowned king of Scottish boxing while still in his middle thirties. And that is virtually
what the acquisition of the St Andrews Sporting Club from Les Roberts means.
TRUE GRIT carried Vinny Pazienza to victory over Greg
Haugen in their gruelling, exciting fight for the IBF
lightweight title. Pazienza showed that despite the flash he's
a fighter of fortitude.
It was revealed afterwards that Pazienza almost wasn't
able to fight. He went through a violent stomach upset just
hours before getting into the ring.
Pazienza, having struggled to make the weight, gorged
himself for 20 minutes with foods that apparently included
bananas, green apples, waffles and raisins washed down
with copious amounts of orange juice.
And he suffered for it, coming down with cramps,
diarrhoea and vomiting.
IT looks as if the injury to his right hand suffered against Simon Brown last year has turned
Canadian welterweight hope SHAWN O'SULLIVAN into effectively a one-handed fighter.
Although he easily outpointed Quebec's tough-chinned DENIS SIGOUIN in their 10-rounder
at Ottawa, non-TV'd, it seems that Shawn was relying heavily on the left jab and hook
throughout.
