WANDSWORTH heavyweight Gary Mason (17st 3'^lbs)
scored his 21st win as a professional, the 20th inside the
distance, when he knocked out Andre Van den Oetelaar of
Holland in the second of the scheduled eight round main
event at the Cliffs Pavilions.
The show was the first for snooker impresario Barry Hearn,
who promoted it with Terry Lawless, Mason's manager.
The huge Mason had looked sharp in the first round,
catching the Dutchman with good left jabs that were t o set
him up for the finish.
I WOULD like to start this column with a Missing Persons
Report. Tim Witherspoon, Hector Camacho and Mario
Martinez have all disappeared into boxing's black hole.
Witherspoon is not rated in the top ten by either the
WBC or the IBF, which I find incredible since guys like
James Broad and Jose Ribalta are rated.
The Camacho case is worse. In his last three fights,
Hector has beaten Edwin Rosario, Cornelius Boza-Edwards
and Howard Davis, but not one of the three bodies have him
in their top ten light-welterweights, which is ridiculous.
