THE heavyweight unification series being promoted by Don King and
Butch Lewis and televised by Home Box Office, the American pay TV
giant, looked in a state of flux as of last week.
The World Boxing Association have ordered their new champion, James
"Bonecrusher" Smith (pictured right with his wife after heating Tim
Witherspoon). to defend against Tony Tubbs, former champion and
current WBA No. 1 contender, by April 11.
But Smith has applied for special exemption so that he can meet World
Boxing Council champion Mike Tyson at Las Vegas on March 7.
UNBEATEN Brian Schumacher suffered an embarrassing
knockdown before disposing of import Ezeke "The Sheik"
Minnis in the third round at Alfreton Leisure Centre.
Schumacher, topping the bill in an amazing nine-fight
card, was in a different class to Minnis, a 21-year-old from
the Bahamas who claimed eight wins in 10 fights.
THE WBC is preparing to launch its junior championship
in a big way in the New Year, and some pairings for t h e new
titles are already in the pipeline.
The success or failure of the idea will depend on the
quality of t h e matches, but they seem to have a good chance
as promoters will be happy to use the " title " tag to boost
their shows.
On the subject of title fights, two interesting WBA title
matches are being discussed. At cruiserweight, Evander
Holyfield may put his crown on the line against Henry
Tillman and Bernardo Pinango has an offer to meet Frankie
Duarte.
