BOB FOSTER was coming to London town. Foster was a
33-year-old deputy sheriff f r om Albuquerque, New Mexico,
but more significantly he was the light-heavyweight
champion of the world, arguably the greatest the division
had ever seen.
Yes, that word " greatest " again. Boxing is an exciting
sport, rich in its history and legends, and even the best
writers can become a little t o o liberal in their use of such
superlatives. A great prospect can mean any fighter riding a
two fight winning streak, and a great champion can be a
fellow who has gone all of six weeks without losing his title.

THE fight that some saw as a spurious showdown turned
out to be something extra-special. Sugar Ray Leonard's
points victory over Marvelous Marvyn Hagler was a superb
spectacle, an exhibition of skill and ring science and a
wonderful advertisement for the sport.
By now I 'm sure all our readers will have seen the fight
and formed individual assessments on the correctness of the
verdict.

IN 1985 Ernie Woodman and his committee from the
Sussex E B A organised a Convention at Brighton which I
attended. It was a first-class effort , with video coverage of
the whole proceedings, and which Ioften watch, as it brings
back happy memories. At the time Ernie promised there
would be a similar Convention in 1987, and he is keeping
that promise. It will be on July 12, and Ernie says that
everyone will be welcome.

RICHARD WILLIAMS produced a career best performance to comfortably outpoint
Honor Oak's formidable national schools champion Lee Arscott at the York Hall.
Williams (Heathbrook) was beaten by Arscott earlier in the season during the schools',
so the victory was that bit sweeter for Richard.
The bout was fought at a furious pace, with Williams surviving some crushing hooks that
the stylish Arcott opened up with.
A furious exchange of body shots was the highlight during the first, but throughout the
round Williams remained calm and dictated for spells with his accurate jab.
