CALM before the storm
- that was heavyweight
title contender Hasim
Rahman, who, the night
before Holyfield-Lewis, notched
his 30th success against one
controversial defeat (last time out
against David Tua in December)
by cutting up the smaller Michael
"Gold" Rush in the fifth of a 10-
rounder at Roseland Ballrooms.
I have seen greater heavyweight
hopes than Rahman and far better
shows than this one staged by Cedric
Kushner.
LUEBECK - March 13: Locally-based Cuban southpaw JUAN CARLOS GOMEZ - the man Midlander Rob Norton
nearly challenged late last year before illness intervened - retained his WBC cruiserweight title when he won a
unanimous 12-round decision over Argentina's MARCELO DOMINGUEZ on scores of 119-110 and 119-111 twice.
Gomez, who won the title from Dominguez at Mar Del Plata in February 1998, was forced to work hard and it seemed
closer than the scorecards suggested. "For his next defence, I'll choose an easier challenger," said promoter Klaus-
Peter Kohl. "After that, I'd like to arrange a unification fight, why not against WBA champion Fabrice Tiozzo?"
Gomez is pictured (right) landing an uppercut.
On the same show, southpaw ARTUR GRIGORIAN, an Uzbek based in Germany, retained his WBO lightweight title
when he unanimously outpointed Spain's former European champion OSCAR GARCIA CANO over 12 rounds. Cano
was stopped in 10 by Billy Schwer to concede his Euro title in October 1997 and is pictured (left) finding the target.
