GREAT rivals Sugar Ray
Leonard and Thomas Hearns,
from a distance at least, looked
young and fresh enough to go at it
a third time - not that I would
want to encourage them.
But the intense rivalry has
clearly mellowed since their
second meeting - a controversial
draw - in Las Vegas in 1989.
Today Leonard, 42, is a manager
while Hearns, 40, hopes to box for
another title before die end of the
year.
When they first fought 17 years
ago at Caesars Palace, the pair,
then welterweights, were
untouchable - sporting heroes
surrounded by large entourages.
Today they blend in with the
crowd - well almost. Leonard,
THE notion that Mike Tyson should be
allowed out of prison on day release to
train and box makes a mockery of the penal
system in America.
But that is the latest development in the
career of the former two-time heavyweight
champion, jailed earlier this month for
offences at a traffic incident in Maryland last
August.
A jail official confirmed that Tyson, after 60
days' good behaviour, could ask the judge for
permission to leave prison temporarily to
allow him to fight again. So Tyson could be
training again within 60 days.
THE French can look forward to a promising year ahead. On April 10
at Paris Bercy Stadium, former Olympian JULIEN LORCY bids for
JEAN-BAPTISTE MENDY'S WBA lightweight crown in a clash of idols which is
sure to be a big-selling event. Promoter Michel Acaries says the loser will
probably retire.
And because Mendy retained his crown against mandatory challenger
Alberto Sicurella in Paris in .January, the veteran southpaw has a year's grace.
It means the winner of Mendy-Lorcy will fight DJAMEL LIFA, the former
European super-featherweight champion. It is likely that the next challenger
for the title will be another Frenchman, BRUNO WARTELLE.
Anyone equipped with the WBA ratings might justifiably ask how these
fights are allowed to happen. But that is how the sport operates today - make
the match first, then get the rating.
