THOMAS HEARNS was not too chuffed when he
showed up at the Hamed-Soto Press conference
only to find no one had left a name and place for
him on the two top tables.
When promoter Cedric Kushner announced
the Hitman and invited him to say a few words,
not surprisingly Heams, who could end up boxing
Britain's CRAWFORD ASHLEY on the October
22 Hamed Detroit show, had left the building.
JOHNNY TAPIA has pulled out of a projected
October challenge for JORGE JULIO'S WBO
bantamweight title, claiming he needs a break.
Tapia, who lost his WBA bantamweight title
to Paulie Ayala in June, said he needs a holiday
with his family, but added: "If I get back in the
ring, Ayala's the first guy I want."
Tapia denied talk of retirement. "My mind's
not there right now. I really do want to fight
Julio, but I'm not 100 per cent. I've been training
23 years and never took a vacation. It's
been fighting, fighting and fighting."
Ayala is expected to defend against former
Tapia victim DANNY ROMERO in December.
LIGHTWEIGHTS on a collision
course. Bobby Vanzie and
Stephen Smith, tuned up for
their November 29 showdown on
the Eamonn Magee-Paul Burke bill.
British and Commonwealth lightweight
champion Vanzie, like many
before him, had to settle for a shutout
(60-54 from referee Roy Francis)
points success against born survivor
Brian Coleman of Birmingham in
their six-rounder.
