A RIFT has developed at Main Events between
family members and could destroy the promotional
company which guides champions Lennox
Lewis and Fernando Vargas, plus contenders Ike
Quartey, David Tua, Vernon Forrest, Zab Judah
and Andrew Golota.
During Dino Duva's recent extended leave of
absence, Kathy Duva, widow of Dan, ran the
business, but efforts are now being made to
resolve the power struggle, which could crush
one of the sport's most powerful organisations.
"Everybody's trying to resolve this," said Dino,
allied closely with father Lou and sister Donna,
wife of trainer Tommy Brooks.
If a split were to take place, Kathy would be
joined by Mike Boorman, who's married to
Deanna Duva, and lawyer Pat English.
Farnell delight
MANCHESTER'S undefeated light-middleweight
Anthony Farnell, the Central Area champion, is
poised for major US exposure on August 7 when
he features on the undercard of Francois
Botha's heavyweight 10-rounder against
Shannon Briggs.
Farnell will be the first fight as part of cable network
Showtime's live telecast.
No opponent has been named, but Farnell,
assuming he wins, is then expected to return to
Britain in the autumn to fight veteran Steve
Foster, who has already been training in Tenerife
for several weeks.
Also on the Atlantic City bill is WBO super-bantamweight
champion Marco Antonio Barrera,
who now defends against Argentine Pastor
Maurin, once proposed as a challenger for
Naseem Hamed's WBO featherweight title.
THE row over Pele Reid rages on, promoter
Frank Warren this week speaking out in defence
of Brendan Ingle's decision to accept the match
against Orlin Norris at London Arena last month.
Warren, who meets with Reid this week, said: "I
really take offence when people say our boxers
don't get tests and when they do - and get beaten
- complain they've been overmatched.
"Pele got careless against Norris. You can teach
a fighter all you like, but once the bell goes he's
on his own. It's down to them. Pele had done well
in sparring with the likes of Brian Nielsen."
THOMAS HEARNS is determined to fight on. The
Detroit veteran is scheduled to make an appearance
on the David Reid-Kevin Kelly bill in Atlantic
City tonight, but I wouldn't be surprised if the
match fails to materialise.
Hector Camacho was pulled off the card, but
Butterbean, the four-round king, was added. He
is warming up for another appearance in Tijuana
on July 31.
