Too easy, Winky
FORMER champions Imamu Mayfield and
Ronald "Winky" Wright scored wins on Don
King's Miami show on March 27.
Mayfield, former IBF cruiserweight king,
stopped Franklin Edmundson in the fourth of
a mismatch. Wright, who beat Ensley Bingham,
Steve Foster and Adrian Dodson over here in
WBO light-middleweight title defences, knocked
out Derrick G r a h am in the third.
American light-heavy Antonio Tarver, a
member of the Atlanta Olympic team, stopped
loser Roy Francis in the third of another poor
match.

THE big-hitting career of
former Commonwealth
cruiserweight champion
DARREN CORBETT
looked in tatters after he was stopped
in nine rounds by Frenchman
STEPHANE ALLOUANE on the
Manchester bill.

JULIEN LORCY confounded
experts and critics alike with
a scintillating sixth-round
demolition of bloodied, battleweary
Jean-Baptiste Mendy to win
the WBA lightweight title at the
Palais des Omnisports at Bercy.
If Mendy was left stunned, as much
by the blows which sent him down as
the referee's decision to intervene, the
crowd was aghast at having witnessed
the finest performance of Lorcy's 44-
fight (one defeat) career, the hammering
of a champion arguably in the best
form of his long career and a southpaw
like Mexican Arnulfo Castillo, who
twice gave Julien a terrible time.

IT CAN be confusing when a talented
fighter such as Roy Jones
makes his own rules.
The WBC are holding purse offers
for Roy's defence against "interim
champ" Graciano Rocchlgianl
and have stated they would not
sanction any other fight.
At the same time Roy is said to be
signed for a unification showdown
with IBF king Reggie Johnson,
presumably with only his WBA title
on the line.

THE recent controversial world unification
fight between EVANDER HOLYFIELD and
LENNOX LEWIS was only the fourth
drawn title bout in heavyweight history.
While the rumblings of discontent still
roll around the world about the decision,
which seemed an injustice to Lewis, you
have to go back to November 20,1906 for
the first world heavyweight title fight draw.
Participants were champion TOMMY
BURNS and Philadelphia JACK O'BRIEN.
Burns had won the vacant title when
"Boilermaker" James J. Jeffries retired as
undefeated champion in 1905. Marvin Hart
had subsequently taken the title by defeating
Jack Root.

TRIUMPH light-heavyweight
Jim Twite pulled off the
biggest ABA Championships
upset for years when he sensationally
knocked out Fitzroy Lodge prospect
David Haye in the first at York Hall.
One superb southpaw left cross,
driven straight through the centre of
his guard, caught Haye coming in and
dumped him heavily on the canvas.
David struggled up at the count of
five, only to fall over again, and
although he rose once more for the
rest of the mandatory eight, his legs
were out of control and it was waved
off. It was recorded as a "KO", the
time one minute 26 seconds.

THE Police Boxing Association of England has added two further
Police Community Clubs to the London area after funding the formation
of one in Pinner and one in Tottenham.
Both are the result of joint funding from local authorities and police,
the former in a police/Harrow scheme and the latter in conjunction with
Harringay. It will be called the Harringay Police Community Boxing
Club.
