WHILE American promoters Bob Arum and Don King
are, for a change, in agreement and firmly behind the
move to make open-scoring a permanent feature,
Londoner Frank Maloney is urging the Board to come
into line with world authorities and most European
commissions by introducing judges for title fights here.
Maloney, whose latest petition is fuelled by the
points victory Drew Docherty received against his
boxer Patrick Mullings in Peterborough last month, is
not the first to raise the issue.

BRADLEY PRYCE, the Welsh ABA champion and brother of
former pros Delroy and Byron, is to join the pro ranks. The flashy,
quick-handed prospect, who recently turned 18, is nicknamed
"The Spider" and will join the Enzo Calzaghe stable which has
yet to suffer a pro defeat.

A LIGHTWEIGHT who hopes to figure in Billy
Schwer's future is unmarked Kentish Towner
STEPHEN SMITH, son of trainer Darkie.
This sharp-shooter will look to steal the attention on
Schwer's undercard when he defends his recently-won
IBF Inter-continental title against Bulgarian IVO GOLAKOV.
Smith's leash is steadily being loosened after a
low-key initiation in Germany and the southpaw can
pick up more experience before receiving an almost
inevitable domestic shot at Bobby Vanzie.
But this scheduled 12-rounder tomorrow may tell us
little we do not already know.

FORMER European lightweight champion POLI
DIAZ (lOst 91bs), making his third attempt at a
comeback since his commendable 1991 'world' title
challenge to Pernell Whitaker, was hardly in deep against
Slovakian TIBOR HORVATH (list 21bs), who could boast
only three wins in 30 attempts.
Diaz, who has spent time in a variety of institutions,
legal and medical, milked the Leganes crowd with a lap of
honour before entering the ring, but has little left once the
bell goes. Caught by a left in the first, he went into a little
dance to show he was unhurt before landing enough to
bring a swelling beneath Horvath's left eye.
