THIS week's casualty list saw veteran
Jamaican SIMON BROWN ruled out of his
February 20 middleweight clash against
CORNELIUS CARR in Middlesbrough and
HARRY SIMON, because of injury, withdraw
from a scheduled WBO light-middleweight title
defence against KEVIN LUESHING at Newcastle
on February 13.

RICHARD EVATT has a taxing schedule this month, by anyone's
standards. On February 13, in Jastrzebie, Poland, about 10
minutes from the Czech Republic border, the undefeated Coventry
puncher boxes Ghana's tough SMITH ODOOM in defence of his IBO
Inter-continental title.
Evatt, who will probably have to go the distance, is then booked to
defend again on Jess Harding's bill in Coventry 13 days later against
South African ANDREW MATABOLA, whom he should stop.
Hsu-ding has joined forces with Leicester promoter Johnny Griffin,
agreeing to a six-fight deal for ticket-sellers MARK PAYNE and NEIL
SIMPSON, both of whom box on the February 26 show.

GERMAN southpaw BERT SCHENK claimed the vacant WBO
middleweight title when he knocked out Bahamian FREEMAN
BARR in the fourth of a scheduled 12-rounder before a crowd of 2.000
at the Stadthalle.
Now Schcnk is expected to make a voluntary defence before facing
Sheffield's Ryan Rhodes, his mandatory challenger, later this year.
Referee Mark Nelson of America counted out Barr. 28. who turned
away and dropped to one knee after taking a left hook. The official
time of the finish was 2-23.
Barr (11st 4lbs) showed flashes of his talent, switching stance early
on, but couldn't hurt the German and claimed he was thumbed and
blinded momentarily by the finishing punch. But il was mostly
one-sided as Schenk (11st 5lbs) worked too hard and threw too many
punches.

BEDFORD ABC held its second dinner show of the season
in front of a full house at the Moat House Hotel on December
7, with former WBO featherweight champion Colin
McMillan the Guest of Honour.
A Bedford Select won 6-3 in a team match over Ballina
from County Mayo (Ireland), with feather Garrett McTernan
winning a very close contest against Noel Maughan
(Ballina).
