BRIAN COLEMAN, a familiar face on the pro circuit,
reached his 100th fight on the London Arena card
without much acknowledgement from the Board of
Control, whom I seem to recall handing Miguel
Matthews a trophy for reaching the same milestone
in Sheffield in 1996.
Coleman, after going the distance with Harlow
prospect Steve Murray, was understandably upset,
but picked up a £100 bonus from promoter Frank
Warren.
"I asked him if he wanted an easy or hard one,"
said manager Nobby Nobbs. "He chose the latter.
He's a smashing lad."
Brian, a pro since November 1991 when he drew
over six with Jamie Morris, received acknowledgement
from the crowd for his effort and services to the
sport.
A month short of 30, the Midlander has lost far
more than he has won but has faced every calibre of
domestic opposition - from Jon Thaxton to Paul
Samuels - and usually goes the distance.

MARC SMITH of Swansea retired at the end of the
third, not the second as I had reported in the June 25
issue, against Roy Rutherford in Dublin (June 19).
"It's the first time I've had to retire on my stool in
42 fights," said Marc. "I know I was losing, but hurt
my hand and couldn't throw punches."
Record-keepers should note also Rotherham's
Sean Green lost in three rounds - not one - against
Samir Laala of Algeria in Paris on June 1.

EUROPEAN light-middleweight champion Mamadou
Thiam will box on the undercard of David Reid's
WBA light-middleweight title defence against Kevin
Kelly in Atlantic City on July 16.
"I want Mamadou to discover America in the
same way Khalid Rahilou and Laurent Boudouani
did," said his promoter Michel Acaries.
"But even if he is set to become official challenger
for Reid [Thiam is No. 2 behind Kelly], that doesn't
mean he will fight for the title straight away. He must
learn his craft first."
Thiam's last challenger, Orhan Delibas, has had
surgery on an ulcer inside his jaw three times since
he lost in seven rounds in Paris last month.
Delibas was unable to take antibiotics during
training and the punches taken against Thiam made
his condition worse.

MAIN EVENT on Steve Foster's show at Bowlers in
Old Trafford, Manchester tonight (July 2) features
local attraction Mike Gormley, the Central Area
super-middleweight champion, taking on Brummie
Michael Pinnock over eight, writes STEVE CONNOLLY.
Gormley won the Area crown at this venue with an
exciting second-round stoppage of unbeaten Glenn
Williams last September and continued his recent
good form with a points win over durable (at his
level) Dean Ashton last time out.

Smith survives
FORMER WBC light-welterweight champion Lightnin' Lonnie Smith got
blasted so hard, he literally twirled around before falling to the floor
against Miami-based Cuban Diobelys Hurtado in the Miami chief support.
But veteran Smith managed to get up from the first-round knockdown and
the Cuban wasn't able to catch him again en route to a 10-round unanimous
verdict. Scores were 99-91 (twice) and a surprising 96-93.
Smith (10st 11/2lbs), from Denver, showed exceptional handspeed for a
36-year-old, but kept telegraphing his punches - even his jabs - as he tried
to catch the WBC's No. 4-rated contender.
