JERRY PERENCHIO is not a well-known figure in boxing,
but clearly doesn't need money or publicity.
On November 21 he resigned as promoter of Oscar De La
Hoya, who, outside of the heavyweight division, is perhaps
the biggest money generator in the business.
His reason? Jerry doesn't have the time. He wants to
concentrate on developing a new television network.
Perenchio also owns Univision, who struck a deal with De
La Hoya after Oscar split from Bob Arum.
There is now talk of De La Hoya and Arum, who went
through an acrimonious split, reuniting.
Richard Schaefer, chief executive of De La Hoya Golden
Boy Enterprises, didn't rule out the possibility.
With De La Hoya unlikely to fight again until May 4
because he is recovering from surgery on his left wrist, the
chances are he will not commit himself to a long-term future
with any promoter in particular.
De La Hoya said he has perhaps three or more fights left
before he retires. What matters now is working with a
promoter who can secure him the fights he wants most.

GARY LOCKETT sent out a chilling message with a two-round
annihilation of Leytonstone's useful CHRIS NEMBHARD.
This eight-threes went on right after the tedious Nelson-Vasilev main event and
those who stayed behind saw a performance which bordered on frightening.
Lockett, from Cwmbran in Wales, was a head shorter and had to solve the problem
of getting close. The long-armed Nembhard looked extremely confident and rightly
kept it at distance, producing a few good left-hand counters to the body.
But late in the first a short left hand which followed an overhand right (which missed)
floored the Jamaican-born Peacock fighter. Nembhard was up straight away, smiling.
Chris tried to take the initiative in the next, but just couldn't take Lockett's power.
More than that, couldn't cope with his accuracy. Unbeaten Gary, having his first fight
for Sports Network after leaving Matchroom, was pinpoint.

BOBBY WARD of Dagenham
ABC picked up the Best
Boxer trophy when the
98th London Feds finals were
held at the Royal Garden Hotel
on November 12.
He unanimously outpointed Repton's Danny
Clark at Class A 54 kilos, all three judges
scoring 60-57. It was Ward's ninth bout (eight
wins), while for Clark it was the 38th (30 wins).
The Dagenham lad went on to outpoint
Marcus Poston of Harwich in the semis-finals
last Saturday.
