NASEEM HAMED, a bit sleepy to
begin with (talking in the morning
from Palm Springs over a week ago),
is his usual, confident self.
Naz, preparing for the fascinating April 7 showdown
with Marco Antonio Barrera in Las Vegas, made himself
available for a conference call to British reporters.
Hamed said he was preparing hard, though his statement
conflicted with another of how he was "playing
golf, enjoying the sun and the pool".
Training camps are obviously not what they once
were.
SCOTT HARRISON was too big, strong
and efficient for Liverpool's more experienced
RICHIE WENTON, who was stopped on his
feet with three seconds remaining of the
fourth in a 12-rounder for the Glaswegian's
Commonwealth and vacant British featherweight
titles.
BRITISH and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion DAVID STARIE had little difficulty with tough but
injury-prone ANDY FLUTE of Coseley, forcing the Midlander to retire at the end of third in a non-title eight-rounder.
Flute, while obviously fit at 12st 2 1/2lbs, hadn't boxed in more than two years and didn't really know what to do with
the Bury St. Edmunds stylist, who dominated the opening three minutes.
He picked quick punches with hands held low and ended the round with a terrific right uppercut.
By the second there were signs of damage to Flute's nose, and Starie kept flicking out his annoying jab and following
up with combinations of soft and hard blows.
Andy made more of an effort to get some points on the board, jabbing his way forward and throwing the occasional
long right to the body, but Starie's reflexes and hands were too fast.
