THE day after I was informed Roberto Duran was still coming
to the UK for a dinner function in Newcastle (October 27), a
message landed on my desk saying the Panamanian legend's trip
had been cancelled.
Unfortunately, this was too late for me to publish. Hence my
column last week said it was all systems go when it was not.
The organisers intend to have Duran, 50, over as soon as he
recovers. Duran's medical condition worsened because of a
complication following a car accident in Argentina.
Roberto contracted a viral infection that needed surgery.
Duran remains in hospital but, according to event organiser
Martyn Devlin, is keen to visit these shores and meet his fans.
As soon as I have news of a new date and Duran's condition,
I'll publish the information on these pages.

Sanigar's Sunday best
CHRIS SANIGAR, whose last Sunday afternoon
show was a success, goes again on November 25
at Whitchurch Leisure Centre, Bristol with Darren
Dorrington topping in a, wait for it, WBF European
middleweight title fight.
Also appearing on the card, which starts at 3pm, is
Jane Couch in an eight-twos, plus her stablemate
Claire Cooper. Gareth Hogg.

BRITISH super-featherweight title challenger CARL
G R E A V E S of Newark has been forced to quit after
failing a brain scan, contributor Lee Siggs informs me.
The "failure" came as a body blow to a 25-year-old who was scheduled to headline
a show in Gibraltar next month.
Greaves is waiting on a second opinion but has received a letter from the Board
stating his licence has been suspended. He said: "The scans have to be sent to
my own GP but, if it's as bad as we think it is, there's no point appealing.
"The punches I've taken have caused some trauma. I've accepted it, but am
still devastated. Boxing has been my life for the last 14 years.
"The worst part is things were just coming together. I had the fight lined up in
Gibraltar and was guaranteed another British title shot next year.
