REASONS, excuses, whatever you want to call them, but Aussie
Shannan Taylor said his demise - three stoppage defeats this
year - has been down to drugs.
Beaten in four at York Hall, Bethnal Green by London puncher
Richard Williams for the vacant IBO light-middleweight title earlier
this month, Taylor admitted he has had an addiction to cocaine.
He said he first took the drug in August 2000 and had also been
drinking heavily. Shannan estimates he wasted S40,000 fuelling his
habit
IA/EST HAM'S Garry Delaney, who was at the Peacock show
Win London Docklands the night Sebastiaan Rothmann
knocked out Crawford Ashley in nearby Dagenham, is to get next
stab at the WBU cruiserweight champion.
The match is being lined up for Carnival City, South Africa on
March 2 - the same night Baby Jake Matlala has his farewell
contest and Phillip Ndou defends his WBU super-featherweight
crown.
WE should know within a week or so whether Mike Tyson can
even consider boxing Lennox Lewis in April.
The Clark County District Attorney has set itself that deadline to conclude its
investigation into allegations of sexual assault against the former world heavyweight
champion this summer, while Tyson was training in Big Bear, California.
Assuming Tyson (who has proclaimed his innocence throughout) is cleared, the next
step will be for him to receive a licence from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Tyson has not boxed in Las Vegas since October 1999, when his scheduled 10-
rounder against Orlin Norris ended in a No Contest following Norris being dropped by a
punch after the bell to end the first.
GOOD news for the WBF - their
version of the European title is
big in Kirovograd!
That much was clear as Victor Fessetchko,
a native of that Ukrainian city, displayed a
hitherto unseen enthusiasm to outpoint local
favourite Darren Dorrington in a thrilling 10-
rounder at Whitchurch Sports Centre.
Fessetchko, whose previous nine visits to
Britain had all ended in defeat, stepped up
several gears in his keenness to claim the
dubious honour at middleweight and was
rewarded with a 97-95 verdict from referee
Grant Wallis. (This is a downmarket championship
which doesn't run to judges).
