F! > INCHLEY ABC enjoyed a hugely-
| successful trip to Las Vegas,
beating a Nevada Select 6-5 at
the Texas Station Hotel & Casino on
April 27.
"It was a great night," said Finchley coach
John Oliver. "The place was packed, with
people being turned away."
The night before, a huge civic reception
was held at the Nevada Partners Center (exreferee
Richard Steele's gym) attended by
United States Congressmen, Senators and
the Mayor of Las Vegas.

CAMBRIDGE Police's ABA welterweight quarter-finalist BEN HUDSON was set to box
STEVE CROMPTON of Yarmouth Kingfisher in Norwich on April 20 before being forced
out by illness.
"I pulled him out because of a chest infection," said coach Mick Taylor. "He couldn't get
that second breath and went on a course of antibiotics. But I can't get him to stop - he ran
the London Marathon on the Sunday [April 22]."
After losing to Steve Briggs in the ABA quarter-finals in mid-March, Hudson boxed Welsh
champion Stuart Phillips at Basingstoke at the end of the month (reported last week).
"He lost a majority, alter being given a public warning for holding," said Taylor. "It was
the first warning of his life."
Mick hoped Hudson would be back in action once he has got over his chest infection:
"There's so many shows about at the moment.
"I would like to think Ben's put himself in contention [with his performance at the ABAs
in Liverpool]," he added. "They should give newer boxers a chance at international level."

THE decision by the BBC to give extensive coverage on
Grandstand to the Four Nations in Liverpool during Holy Week
made an immediate impact on Sefton ABC's tournament held at
Our Lady Queen of Peace Social Club, Ford, Litherland on April 20.
Although a popular venue, previous attendances had been only moderate,
but this show attracted a capacity crowd - many returning to amateur boxing
after a lengthy absence.

CHRIS HIGGS (13) scored his first win and collected Boxer of the Night before
a packed Forest Hills Golf Club where the Lydney gym staged their final show
of the season on April 23, writes PETER FOLEY.
This precious victory, secured in front of his home crowd, was proof perseverance can pay off -
the Forest of Dean youngster finally got off the mark at the 12th attempt.
His encounter with Weston rival Mitch McSweeney was schoolboy boxing at its purest, both full
of energy and commitment. Higgs claimed the opener, alternating neat clusters between head and
body and reinforcing his superiority after the interval by forcing a count from a left hook.
