GEORGIE SMITH, the popular former Basildon
light-welter and welterweight, was found
guilty on Monday (November 12) of GBH on a
72-year-old pensioner.
Regrettably, this will reflect poorly on boxing, but
Smith had a poor track record - was jailed for three
months for ABH in 1993, twice banned for drinkdriving
and admitted suffering mental problems from
taking Ecstasy.
This, combined with the fact he knew how to use
his fists, no doubt contributed to the gruesome crime
he committed and the judge, who will pass sentence
on November 26, said the former boxer faces a long
prison term.

OLYMPIC champion Audley Harrison may be sidelined
with injury, but the BBC intend to broadcast again
before the end of the year.
They will show Robin Reid's next defence of the WBF
super-middleweight title at the Coventry Skydome on
December 19. British light-heavy champ Neil Simpson
and promising lightweight Nicky Cook also feature.
Reid's opponent is Brazilian Reginaldo Andrade,
who has lost one of his last 17. Simpson will box a
non-title eight-rounder, Cook for his first title belt (WBF
Inter-continental feather)

ALEX ARTHUR takes a big leap up on the Bellahouston bill when he
meets experienced Hungarian southpaw L a s z l o Bognar over eight.
The visitor, of course, is the man who stopped and was stopped by Michael
Gomez this year in high-intensity fights. Laszlo nearly earned a 'world' title tilt
against Acelino Freitas for beating Gomez - and was willing to go in with the
feared Brazilian puncher, too.
He is 33 and has had 33 fights, winning 27, drawing two, and losing four. He
has stopped 13 and is a sound, sharp technical boxer with good hand-speed.
Arthur acknowledges that.
The Edinburgh prospect, 23, has had only seven pro fights (all wins, five early)
and been a pro only a year, but the key is his amateur experience

THERE is further British interest on the show
with the meeting of 36-year-old former Lennox
Lewis victims.
HENRY AKINWANDE, no longer licensed in Britain,
should have more left in the tank when he squares up
to OLIVER McCALL.
The long-limbed, quick-handed Akinwande, a
former WBO champ pictured left, has won eight in a
row since losing in disgrace to Lewis in 1997.
Last time out he scored a spectacular first-round
win over Maurice Harris (June).

THE 12-rounder to unify the IBF and WBO super-bantamweight
titles on the Mayweather-Chavez bill failed to do so as MANNY
PACQUIAO, holder of the former belt, shared a six-round technical
draw with AGAPITO SANCHEZ.
Referee Marty Denkin stopped it, on the doctor's advice, at 1-20 of
the session because of a nasty cut over Pacquiao's right eye. It went to
the scorecards, with the incomplete sixth round scored, as required by
the unified boxing rules.
