WBA featherweight champion Derrick Gainer
received a year's probation from a Florida judge
after pleading no contest to a battery domestic charge
involving his soon-to-be ex-wife. Gainer spent a night in
jail following the incident, which turned out to be a heated
row where Gainer booted a television.
FORMER WBC lightweight champion MIGUEL ANGEL GONZALEZ has come to his senses
and will reportedly make formal his announcement to retire.
Gonzalez was shockingly bad when losing on points over to MANUEL GOMEZ on the
Holyfield-Ruiz bill, yet at the time thought he had won.
Perhaps he has watched the tape and realised the truth: Gonzalez was slow and remarkably
easy to hit, though Shane Mosley told me, "Gomez is a good fighter- the best challenger
I fought as a lightweight."
SECUNDA - March 4: ANTHONY TSHEHLA retained his South African and All-Africa featherweight titles by
pounding an ageing and shop-worn JACKIE GUNGULUZA into one-sided stoppage defeat at the Graceland
Casino, writes PETE MOSCARDI. In so doing he also won the vacant WBC International crown.
Gunguluza (8st 12lbs) had little to offer except experience and survival tactics. He ran out of steam to retire in his
corner at the end of the sixth of a scheduled 12. Although Tshehla (8st 13lbs) is a good prospect - and no doubt this
victory will place him in the world ratings - he is light years away from the likes of Phillip Ndou, Cassius Baloyi and
Mbulelo Botile.
HIGHLIGHT of a depressing night was the display
by Dagenham's KEVIN MITCHELL, who looked
superb stopping COLAN FOREMAN (Bracebridge) after
two rounds of their Senior 51 kgs final.
Foreman is a quality boxer himself, but had no
answer to the accurate lefts of the Londoner, who
forced him to take two counts (one knockdown) in the
second before it was halted between rounds. Kevin,
who showed excellent timing and judgement of
distance, is one to watch.
