RIDDICK BOWE, troubled former world heavyweight
champion, was arrested and jailed on a domestic
assault charge over a week ago.
Bowe was then released on bail and issued
with a restraining order, preventing him from
going near his wife.
It is not the first time Bowe has been charged
with domestic violence. Several years ago he
was convicted of kidnapping his family.
A court date has been set for March 23.
OSCAR DE LA HOYA (above) is intent on fighting
Arturo Gatti in Las Vegas on March 24. He said
it will be his final contest as a welterweight.
The Golden Boy, who hasn't fought in eight months
since losing on points to Shane Mosley, has started
training under Floyd Mayweather Snr and tickets for
the fight have gone on sale despite HBO's lawsuit
against the boxer having been heard by a judge in
New York yesterday.
FORMER Italian and three-time European bantamweight
champion Piero Rollo died last week at the
age of 73.
Born in Cagliari, Rollo was Italian amateur flyweight
champion in 1947, turning pro three years later. He won
the Italian bantam title in 1955 and became European
champion for the first time in 1958, dethroning compatriot
(and former world kingpin) Mario D'Agata on points.
He retained twice before losing to Freddie Gilroy in
London in November 1959, but regained it with a fifthround
knockout of Belgian Pierre Cossemyns in April
1962. A previous challenge to Cossemyns, five months
earlier, had seen him outpointed.
APOLLO'S BRETT WHITE outpointed BEN
WICKENDON of Launceston at light-heavyweight
in the best bout of the Western Counties
(South) championships at the British Legion Club,
Barnstaple on February 3.
That was one of only five bouts left after withdrawals,
but at least all went the distance (there were also three
supports).
An all-Plymouth clash at light-middle saw Paul Brown
(Phoenix) outscore Mayflower's Carl Drake in a hand
battle. Brown used his reach well.
