WHAT with Ricky Hatton's opponent in Manchester tomorrow (see pages
10-11) hardly world class, the WBU light-welterweight champion may
face a hot test round the corner with Frank Warren having signed
EAMONN MAGEE.
The stiff-hitting Belfast southpaw had, until this week, boxed for rivals Panix
Promotions, but Magee's contract reportedly expired yesterday and the boxer and his
manager, Mike Callahan, believed it was time for a change.
NICKY COOK, the unbeaten Dagenham featherweight
hope, is on the mend following operations on his
brittle hands. All going well, he will return on October 20,
but trainer and fattier Paul wanted to make it clear why his
boy had been on the sidelines.
"People have been asking if he's quit," said Cook Snr,
looking well-tanned following a holiday abroad with Nicky.
JAKE LA MOTTA, the Bronx Bull and former world
middleweight champion famous for his great rivalry with
Sugar Ray Robinson, is in the UK next month for a series of
appearances.
Confirmed is his stop in Sheffield on October 24 and Cardiff on
the 26th. There may possibly be another date in London.
The Sheffield do takes place at the Grosvenor House Hotel and
includes a four-course meal, films of his fights, comedian, plus
a question-and-answer session with the great man.
WEST BROMWICH prospect YOUNG MUTTLEY exposed the punch
resistance of Basingstoke southpaw JON HONNEY with a twoknockdown
stoppage in 60 seconds at the Gala Baths.
Honney (10st 5lbs) had recently switched his training base to Wales, while
Muttley had been working under Jason Shinfield with Jawaid Khaliq in the
build-up to this one.
PAUL BOYCE bids to heighten boxing
interest in Swansea when he stages a
public show at the city's Leisure Centre
tomorrow night (Saturday September 15).
It is one of four promotions in Britain tomorrow.
Topping is local boy Jason Williams, rated as a welter
in our last rankings but who will fight as a light-middle
from now on.
