IF Herbie Hide decides to carry on boxing (he is serving
a 90-day suspension after being destroyed last
month), the former WBO heavyweight champion will
probably face the man who beat him, Joseph
Chingangu.
That, according to promoter Jess Harding, is the
only way back for Hide, who looked a finished force
when demolished in two rounds in Newcastle.
WITH Joe Calzaghe cheering
them on before flying to
Copenhagen for tomorrow's
WBO super-middleweight defence,
his two young stablemates from
the ramshackle gym at Newbridge
rugby ground continued their
progress towards emulating his
achievements.
BODY beautiful JEAN-MARC MORMECK,
the WBA's mandatory cruiserweight
title contender, was exposed by
American journeyman FRANK EDMUNDSON,
who was in no shape to last eight rounds
yet clowned his way to the finishing post to
lose unanimously on points.
WITH his lucrative first title defence against Mads
Larsen of Danmark postponed four times and
then called off, European super-middleweight
champion Danilo Haeussler was more than eager to
put his title on the line against voluntary challenger
Vincenzo Imparato of Italy.
SCOTTISH light-welterweight KEVIN ANDERSON
was the only boxer from Britain or Ireland to win
a medal at the European Junior Championships
in Sarajevo, Croatia from September 20-30.
The Denbeath 18-year-old earned bronze, beating opponents
from Finland and Hungary before losing to the eventual gold medallist
from the Ukraine in the semi-finals.
"The Finn was tailed and just jabbed," said Anderson. "But once
I got inside there was no problem. He took three counts.
"The Hungarian was good but a target - he took a lot of punches.
It was stopped on the 15-point rule. He'd beaten a Yugoslav in his
previous bout, a real tear-up."
