BUTCH LESLEY came out on the wrong end of a 12-round split verdict
in a hard-fought battle with Estonian ANDREI KIARSTEN (12st 4lbs)
for the vacant WBU Continental light-heavyweight title.
Judge Karl Rogers of England had Lesley ahead 116-110, but Reg Thompson,
also of England, and South Africa's Simon Xamlashe scored 114-112 for
Kiarsten.
The discrepancy in the totals merely highlights how hard a fight it was to
score rather than questions the competence of the officials.
Kiarsten came forward throughout and did more damage - cutting Lesley
under and over the right eye and in the corner of the left - while the Islington
man delivered the sharper, more eye-catching punches.
ALEX MOON tries to do what Charles
Shepherd, Ian McLeod and Dean
Pithie failed to and defeat ageless
Algerian-born Frenchman AFFIF DJELTI
on the Wythenshawe bill.
Djelti may be 42, but one would never guess watching
him fight. He defends tomorrow the IBO superfeatherweight
belt he won with an upset sixth-round
dismantling of Carlisle's Shepherd early last year - in
Carlisle.
BYRON MITCHELL is turning out
to be a lucky champion.
The man from Ozark, Alabama retained his
WBA super-middleweight belt with a split 12-
round decision over Puerto Rico's Manuel
Siaca, whom he had knocked out in 12 to win
the vacant belt in March.
In a previous reign as WBA 12st king, Mitchell
received a fortunate draw against Bruno Girard,
who later dethroned him in France. When Bruno
was stripped, Mitchell beat Siaca to become
champion for a second time and now, again,
has retained on a debatable decision.
