OMAfl SHEIKA has bounced back from a stoppage
defeat by Joe Calzaghe for the WBO super-middleweight
title last summer and is one fight away from
securing a crack at IBF 12st king Sven Ottke.
Sheika has to beat former Ottke victim Thomas
Tate in New York on September 14, on the eve of Don
King's Madison Square Garden show. The vacant
USBA title will be on the line, though it is effectively
a final eliminator.

ROY JONES entered the ring at
the Staples Center in Los
Angeles last weekend with
seven belts (most of which had
been handed to him) but with his
eye on a bigger prize when he
cnose to box Julio Gonzalez.

BRITISH and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion DAVID STARIE,
fighting abroad for the first time as a pro, had a shortlived but frustrating
encounter with awkward, spoiling Argentine BRUNO GODOY on the Ndou-Rios bill.
Godoy, with 63 pro contests under his belt, was a veteran journeyman, but an
indication of the his desire came in a pre-fight TV interview when he intimated this
scheduled eight-rounder would be his last contest.
Sadly, it became apparent from the start Godoy was content to go out with a
whimper, not a bang. The South American's body had a pale and fleshy look, and his
mouth was gaping open as early as the second.
Referee Len Hunt had his work cut out trying to keep the contest tidy as Starie
mounted pressure and Godoy clutched at every opportunity. A solid combination to
Bruno's chin seconds before the end of the first staggered the Argentine.
