GERRY PENALOSA, the former WBC super-fly king from the Philippines who said he would quit
if he failed to regain his title against MASAMORITOKUYAMA in September (he did fail), is back
in the gym buoyed by reports of a possible rematch with the Japanese.
There is also the bait of a shot at the WBA 8st 3lbs crown should Venezuela's ALEXANDER MUN0Z
dethrone another Japanese, Setsuo "Celes" Kobayashi, in a showdown mooted for December.
The WBA have given their blessing to Munoz meeting Penalosa in Manila.
Penalosa was narrowly outpointed by Tokuyama in Japan, but blasted Kent referee Larry
O'Connell for his handling of the bloody war. Gerry suffered cuts over both eyes and a huge gash
on his scalp, all of which he insisted came from butts.
WBC president Jose Sulaiman said he had "received several protests" on the failure of the
referee to deduct points from Tokuyama. He added he was sure once the protests had been
discussed, a return would be ordered.
HOWARD EASTMAN, preparing in New York
for his November 17 crunch middleweight
fight against former WBA champion William Joppy
in Las Vegas, is back with trainer Kofi Asante,
formerly useful 1980s pro Winston Spencer.
Eastman and John Rooney split more than a
week ago after the latter said he was unhappy
with the set-up and felt he was being squeezed
out.
