SPEED and variety, Kirkland Laing's greatest attributes,
enabled him to win his third British welterweight title final
eliminator, this time at the expense of Cliff Gilpin, whose
previously unbeaten record (13 wins) was spoiled over 12
rounds at the Midlands Sporting Club.
BILLY AIRD, heavyweight boxing's perennial contender,
is title-chasing again after a rousing, crowd-pleasing performance
at the packed Bloomsbury Hotel.
Aird, surprisingly heavy at 14st lOlbs, punched out a
comprehensive 10-round decision over dangerous Winston
Allen.
THAT proposed fight between Gerry Cooney and Joe
Bugner really amazed me. How could the TV people
pretend it was a worthwhile match, and just what sort of a

rounds. The TV people "tested" Joe, but only to make sure
he would stand up.
WALSALL light-heavyweight Cordwell
Hylton faces a tough test against rugged Ben
Lawlor in the eight rounds main event at
Birmingham's Arden Sporting Club on
Monday.
