A LOT of fighting pride, as well as more material rewards, is at stake when Colin
Jones and Kirkland Laing continue their bitter title rivalry at the Royal Albert Hall
on Tuesday.
British and Commonwealth welter champ Jones, one bout away from ownership
of a Lonsdale Belt, meets the man he took the British title from just over a year
ago: there's been considerable bad feeling brewing.
HEAVY-HITTING Penyrheol bantamweight Peter
Jones stole the limelight from his British welterweight
champion brother Colin by crushing Britain's
Moscow Olympics rep Ray Gilbody in a televised
ABA semi-finals sensation at King's Hall, Belle Vue.
Gilbody, stripped of his faculties by a chilling
punch earlier in the third round, was pole-axed by an
enormous right hand after one minute 52 seconds, of
the round.
SCOTLAND are just not good enough to be represented
in the Tampere European Championships, writes BILL
LOTHIAN. Officials held a hurried meeting after the
disastrous showing in the George Wimpey ABA semifinals
at Belle Yue and decided that the cost of the trip
could be better spent in other ways.
CHARLIE NASH makes a
voluntary defence of his
European lightweight title
against Joey GibUisco at
Dublin's Dalymount Park
on Sunday, May 10.
Promoter Philip McLaughlin
has set the fight on the same day
as the Gaelic Football League
final, to be held at nearby Croke
Park.
