EUROPEAN middleweight champion Tony Sibson
finally came out of the tall shadow of one-time world
champion Alan Minter - out into the limelight he prefers
to shun - when he crushed the Crawley southpaw in
the third of a scheduled EBU 12-rounder at Wembley.
Few gave Sibson much of a chance against the hardhitting,
experienced former WBC and WBA champion
and those who did can hardly have dared hope for such a
dramatic and decisive win.
COLIN JONES, the British and Commonwealth welter
champion, was heart-broken when his unbeaten professional
record was smeared with a third round disqualification
against the little-known American Curtis Ramsey at Cardiff.
But the former grave-digger from Gorseinon, in losing his
first contest in 21 outings, could learn a lesson from his own
impetuosity. Colin is a tremendous prospect with a good
punch.
VETERAN Claude Noele, of Trinidad, won the vacant WBA
lightweight title with a unanimous points victory over Rodolfo "El
Gato" Gonzalez after 15 gruelling, punishing rounds at the Bally's
Park Place Casino Hotel.
BOXING NEWS has been officially blacklisted by the
ABA, who, according to secretary Len Mills, intend to
launch a newspaper of their own and a magazine.
Terry Cole, secretary of the sprawling 119-club North Eastern
Counties Provincial ABA, which includes the strife-torn South and
West Yorkshire division, has been 'forbidden' by Mills to speak to
Boxing News, the Sheffield Star and any other paper, in that order.
Confirming, early this week that he had written a letter to Cole to
this effect, Mills said: "We'll sort out our own affairs in a democratic
way. We don't need the interference of the Press or your bad
reports.
