CROWD-PLEASING heavyweight Andy Palmer continued
his rise through the domestic rankings with a prestigious
one-round win over experienced George Scott at the
Anglo-American Sporting Club.
SUBSTITUTE George Walker staged a rousing closing
rally to earn a share of the spoils with Chris Christian in
their light-middleweight eight rounder at York Hall.
ANY chance James Scott had of being considered as a
world title challenger may soon disappear. Scott is on trial
on a five year old murder charge.
Scott was charged with the murder in May 1975 of Russ
Everett of Newark following an armed robbery. Scott was
convicted of the robbery, but the jury failed to reach a
verdict on the murder charge.
Scott is serving 30 to 40 years for the robbery, but the
murder charge hearing was postponed due an appeal against
the robbery conviction.
HILARIO ZAPATA of Panama retained his WBC
light-flyweight title for the fifth time by thrashing
Joey Olivo of Los Angeles, the North American Boxing
Federation champion, into defeat in 13 rounds.
A packed house of around 10,000 in the sweltering
Gynmasio Nuevo saw the tall, slender Olivo take a
one-sided pasting before being retired by his corner at
the end of the 13th.
LAST season's ABA lightweight finalist Tony Bowden had
a tough tune-up for this year's championships when he
outpointed Onslow's Alan Toombs in the star bout on Repton's
sell-out show at York Hall.
