JOE LOUIS, who died on Sunday at the age of 67, was
regarded by many as the finest heavyweight champion of all
time. He would certainly figure high on the list of anyone's
top ten.
Louis watched the Larry Holmes v Trevor Berbick WBC
heavyweight title fight at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, where
he was formerly employed as a greeter. He went back to the
hotel after the championship, where he later died of a heart attack.
SEAN O'GRADY, of Oklahoma City, floored Detroit's
Hilmer Kenty twice in battling his way to an upset,
unanimous 15 rounds decision to capture the WBA lightweight
title in a bloody, thrilling clash at Bally's Park Place
Casino Hotel.
The 22-year-old O'Grady gave his greatest performance,
surviving a cut over the left eye to bang Kenty back around
the ring.
By the middle rounds, Kenty was cut over the right eye
and bleeding f r om inside the mouth.
In the last third of the nationally televised fight O'Grady
was hammering the tall, slender champion f r om one side of
the ring to the other while the pavilion rocked with excitement.
LANGTON "SCHOOLBOY" TINAGO, the Commonwealth
lightweight champion, advanced another rung
up the international ratings ladder when he convincingly
outpointed Scotland's former world champion, Ken Buchanan
over 10 rounds before a wildly enthusiastic capacity
crowd of 5,000 at Salisbury's national sports centre.
MICHAEL SPINKS enhanced .his reputation as the leading light-heavyweight
contender when he demolished iormer two-time champion Marvin Johnson in
four rounds at the Superstar Theatre of the Resorts International Hotel Casino in
Atlantic City.
His spectacular performance made him a household name and increased his
earning potential in a title bout this summer. And he will no longer be identified as
just the brother of former heavyweight king Leon Spinks.
