ROY GUMBS reigns securely as B r i t i sh
middleweight champion after ruthlessly crushing Eddie
Burke's brave, but painful challenge in his first
defence at Kelvin Hall.
Suggestions that the St. Kitts born Londoner, successor
to Finnegan, Sibson and Minter as national
titleholder, may in some ways be an unworthy champion,
were swept aside after two minutes 12 seconds
of round six when referee Harry Gibbs rescued a
dazed Burke.
FAST-RISING featherweight Barry McGuigan had it all
his own way against substitute Terry Pizzaro of Florida in
their scheduled eight rounds main event before a capacity
crowd at the Ulster Hall.
Pizzaro, whose boasting and baiting of McGuigan in the
lead-in to the fight had contributed much to the sell-out,
proved a better talker than a fighter and he was being
battered in a corner when referee Bob McMillan stopped it
halfway through the fourth.
NEVILLE MEADE'S moment at centre stage has been
brief indeed. The British heavyweight champion, topping
an Albert Hall bill less than a month after his title win,
stumbled through 10 indescribably dull rounds to lose on
points to overweight, bald American Leroy Boone of Norfolk,
Virginia.
VERNON VANRIEL completed a hat-trick over old rival
Kevin Docherty with an emphatic sixth round win at the
Assembly Hall.
Docherty, twice outpointed by the rangy Tottenham
lightweight, was dropped at the beginning of the round by a
well-timed right hand and referee Bob Galloway stepped in
almost immediately at just 50 seconds. The bout was
scheduled for eight rounds.
