BRITISH light-welterweight champion Clinton
McKenzie turned in a performance of extraordinary
courage and determination as he dug deep and turned
back the challenge of Sylvester Mittee over 15 gruelling
rounds
THE years of waiting are finally over for veteran heavyweight
slugger Neville Meade.
Meade, an admitted 32, emerged as boxing's latest Cinderella
Man to earn a crack at the British title with a stunning third round
victory over rangy Terry Mintus.
THE sinking of MAPS has left Don King with very mixed
feelings. MAPS scared the pants off King by their incredible
cash bids and last year almost stole Don's main earner Larry
Holmes, so he must have been relieved to see them go down.
However, MAPS were being sued by King for signing
Saoul Mamby to a contract and paying him a large enticement
fee to face Aaron Payor.
WHAT was intended to be a showcase comeback for Gerrie Coetzee on American
TV instead left the strong impression that the South African not only isn't going
anywhere but that his best days as a heavyweight fighter are very much behindhim.
Coetzee's tedious 10 rounds points win over trial horse George Chaplin at
Honolulu.
IF they gave medals for courage in the ring, British light-welterweight champion Clinton
McKenzie would have earned the VC for his heroic defence against Sylvester Mittee at Wembley
Conference Centre on Tuesday. Full report on pages 4-5.
BARRY McGUIGAN, Ireland's best amateur
for years, signs pro forms with Belfast
promoter Barney Eastwood, who has taken
out a manager's licence to look after the Monaghan
featherweight. Barry will make his debut
in Belfast in about six weeks.
