BRITISH welterweight champion Colin Jones won outright
ownership of a Lonsdale Belt by stopping former titleholder
and old foe Kirkland Laing in the ninth at the Albert
Hall  but there were storms for him to weather before the
triumphant finish.

FORMER international star Nick Wilshire has learned right at
the start of his career that the pro game is a lot tougher than
domestic amateur competition. Wilshire, the former ABA and
European junior champion, didn't lose a round of his debut
against game Welshman Steve Davies, but he had to work harder
than the 80-76 scoreline indicates.

TOWERING Thomas Hearns, of Detroit, retained his
World Boxing Association welterweight title and moved a
step closer to a fight with Sugar Ray Leonard by stopping
gritty Randy Shields, of North Hollywood, California, in 12
rounds at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

JOHN FEENEY gives his domestic finances a boost when he takes £4,000 to go
to Italy to challenge for the vacant European bantamweight title against Valerio
Nati at Forii, near Rome, on July 1. The payday is the Hartlepool hope's biggest
purse ever.

MATTHEW SAAD MUHAMMAD successfuUy defended
his World Boxing Council light-heavyweight
title for the seventh time, surviving cuts and his usual
slow start to knock out rangy, Scottish-born challenger
Murray Sutherland, the U.S. Boxing Association
champion, in the ninth round.

HEAVYWEIGHT favourite Big Stan McDermott survived
the customary rocky moments to poleaxe massive Larry
McDonald in the seventh of their entertaining eight round
show closer.
The see-saw battle was brought to a close by a series of
powerful right hands, sending Rastafarian McDonald
crashing to the canvas to be counted out at one minute
34 seconds of the session.
