OF THE five domestic boxers who earned a shot at a world
title this year, only one won.
That fact alone must make Barry McGuigan the major
contender for the Boxing News "Fighter of the Year"
award for 1985.
LLOYD HONEYGHAN (right) enjoyed his most successful year to date
winning the European welterweight title in January, and adding the
British and Commonwealth titles with a stoppage victory over
domestic rival Sylvester Mittee in November.
IT was a rare year for British boxing: we staged five world title fights,
which was the most since 1980 when Alan Minter, Maurice Hope and
Jim Watt were at their respective heights.
Barry McGuigan beat Eusehio Pedroza and Bernard Taylor, while
Charlie Magri, Colin Jones and Pat Cowdell lost to Sot Chitalada,
Don Curry and Azumah Nelson.
Yet, surprisingly, we felt that although the world championships
were great occasions, the majority of them were not great fights.
Magri and Jones were ruled out by cuts in the first third of the
contests, while poor Cowdell was knocked out in the opening
session.
VENTURE ABC, although hit by vandalism which left
their Birkenhead gym virtually a burned-out shell and most
equipment missing, went ahead with their show at the
Primrose Club, Bebington and notched up three victories.
Their promising junior, Billy Knox, collected the best
winner trophy for his points defeat of Tony Lynch
(Salisbury).
