THE good little man beat the good big man, David
defeated Goliath, as Michael Spinks stunned the fight
game by outpointing Larry Holmes over 15 rounds to
win the world heavyweight title as recognised by the
International Boxing Federation.
Promoter Don King billed the event as "History — A
September to Remember." And history was made as
Spinks became the first light-heavyweight champion to
win the heavyweight title. It also marked the first time
two brothers have won the heavyweight championship,
Leon Spinks having held the title for seven months in
1978.
AFTER months of bitter wrangles, European heavyweight champion
Anders Eklund and challenger Frank Bruno finally get down
to business at the third time of asking when they meet for the EBU
title at Wembley on Tuesday.
The match has an unhappy history: it was originally scheduled for
Wembley in May, and when Eklund injured himself in training a
new date in June was arranged. But then a dispute developed
between the Swede's manager Mogens Palle and the Wembley
promoters Mike Barrett and Mickey Duff over the allocation of TV
revenue.
WHEN Frank Bruno steps into the Wembley ring on
Tuesday night to try to relieve Anders Eklund of his
European heavyweight title it would be as well for him to
remember that the big Swede has a habit of upsetting
predictions.
