PROFESSIONAL boxing is the toughest game of them all, and it has
no harder exponent than Colin Jones.
Yet there was a moment in the emotional aftermath of the
Welshman's brave and bloody fourth-round defeat by the elegant
WBA welterweight champ Don Curry which was almost poetic in its
sensitivity.
Jones stood beside the American, gazing long and lingeringly at the
championship belt which represented everything for which he had
sacrificed 17 punishing years in the ring, starting as an eight-year-old in
Gorseinon.
PAT COWDELL , Europe ' s junior-lightweight champion f r om
Warley, confirmed his right t o challenge for Rocky Lockridge's
world title when he h a m m e r e d out a one-sided seventh round
stoppage win over brave Mexican Santos " Apache " Moreno in
the main supporting bout t o the Jones-Curry world title clash,
UNBEATEN Stepney featherweight prospect Jim
McDonnell produced the best form of his career to score a
clear and utterly convincing 10 rounds points victory over
Croydon's aggressive Pat Doherty in their unofficial
British title eliminator at the York Hall.
Although referee Harry Gibbs' score of 100-96 did not
reflect the loser's continual willingness, it was an accurate
indication of how McDonnell dominated practically the
entire bout.
