BIG-TIME boxing made a spectacular return to the city as
local heavyweight John Westgarth knocked out Frenchman
Damien Marignan in the third round of a scheduled
10-round headliner on manager Frankie Deans's excellent
show at the Mayfair.
Marignan had shown himself to be a worthy opponent
while it lasted but once that right crashed against his jaw it'
was all over.

THERE won't be a better fight this year than Tony Burke's
epic defence of his Southern Area middleweight title
against Conrad Oscar.
Points were still in the balance when Burke's tenth round
assault finally cracked Oscar's resistance, and referee Larry
O'Connell intervened as Oscar sagged on to the ropes,
utterly spent.

WITH the confidence of a champion, Tony Willis swept
aside the fearless, but ineffectual, challenge of Paul Chance
for his British lightweight title in five one-sided rounds at
Dudley Town Hall.

MIDDLEWEIGHT IRAN BARKLEY'S blasting his way into
prominence. His one-punch, eighth round knockout over normally
durable WILFORD SCYPION at the Felt Forum, New York on
November 1, televised by Madison Square Garden cable, puts
Barkley on the fringe of world class.
Barkley, from the Bronx, New York, shot out a left jab and then
crashed in the booming right hand that sent Scypion to the floor like
one of those dynamited chimney stacks.

CLASSY welterweights Lloyd Honeyghan and Sylvester Mittee clash in a triple title
extravaganza at Alexandra Palace on Wednesday which is one of the most significant
British welterweight encounters for years. Not only are Honeyghan's European and
Mittee's British and Commonwealth titles at stake, but the match could lead to a
world title for the winner.
With both Don Curry and Milton McCrory, respective WBA and WBC
champions, imminently moving up to the l i s t light-middleweight category, the
winner out of Mittee and Honeyghan (both of whom are world-ranked) must figure
in the series to find new champions. The sidelining of another British welterweight,
Colin Jones, because of chronic injury, also has the effect of creating an unusually
free situation.

A TYPICAL storming performance by Kieran Joyce in
outslugging Timothy Littles, a finalist in this year's National
Golden Gloves, assured Ireland of a prestigious victory
over the United States at the National Stadium.
The score stood at four wins each when the lightmiddleweights
stepped into the ring for the deciding contest
in the nine-bout tournament, with the home crowd urging
Joyce to make it a happy opening to the Irish international
season.

FERNANDO SOSA of the Argentine is likely to be the
next challenger for Barry McGuigan's WBA featherweight
title, according to reports from South America this week.
According to Argentine promoter Tito Lectoure, Sosa is
"90 per cent likely" to meet McGuigan on February 15,
either in Belfast or Dublin.
